2020 Electric City Classic is canceled due to Covid-19

New race dates set for 2021 as Scranton Tomorrow shifts gears to focus on Downtown Scranton business initiatives

SCRANTON, PA — Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Scranton Tomorrow, the local business development non-profit, has decided to cancel this year’s Electric City Classic, scheduled to take place on August 21 and 22 in Scranton. The 2-day international cycling event will return to the Electric City on August 27 and 28, 2021.

In 2019, the inaugural Electric City Classic welcomed hundreds of professional cyclists, and thousands of spectators, to Scranton. With incredible support from sponsors, media partners, business leaders, government officials, and volunteers, the event provided an economic boost to the Downtown Scranton Business District, while promoting health and wellness for people of all ages. 

“We know this year’s event will be greatly missed, and we are all eager to return to the gatherings and festivities in which we find comfort and a sense of familiarity,” said Leslie Collins, Executive Director, Scranton Tomorrow. “However, we feel strongly that canceling the 2020 Electric City Classic truly is in the best interest of the health and safety of our neighbors and participants, locally and globally.”

“We know a lot of athletes who will be disappointed about this cancellation for 2020,” said Race Director Kacey Lloyd. “The 10-turn criterium and 30% cobbled climb created two unique courses in the City of Scranton that had a lot of riders talking after the inaugural year. We thank everyone who came out to support the even in 2019 and we look forward to seeing everyone back in 2021.”
